Final Draft
This is my second semester in advanced ceramics at Mount Si High School. I have taken advanced ceramics senior year and beginning ceramics my freshman year. This year for my theme I focused on the surface design of my projects. Surface design meaning how it is glazed through staining it or glazing it a specific way, in my case with simplicity. Last year I realized that glazing was a major and one of the most important factors that is in ceramics because it it what makes the projects easy to the eyes. So this year I focused on simple glazes that still make a project beautiful or interesting.
How I made the theme possible was first experimenting with all the glazes and stains. I used new patterns, textures and glazes to projects that reflect my theme. In many of the processes I had I would throw a bowl or vase and then glaze them in an entirely different manner to show how different simple glazes can still go together. I would glaze the project sometimes twice to ensure the glaze looks perfect and full. The same technique is applied to all of my projects, some with all of the material (raku, stain, and slip).
I chose this theme because I wanted to focus more on the detail of the projects rather than just randomly choosing your glaze without thought.I think sharp detail is interesting and fun to look at and and some compliment the shape of the projects. I had a much more fun experience with the wheel this year and the way I was staining and creating my projects. This year was more experimental and finding what works best for me on and off the wheel.
Throughout the two semester I have had ceramics I found a new passion for something I love. I found passion within a passion, outside of ceramics I paint so with staining I am able to paint on stain and mix both painting and ceramics.
